Environmental water portal a one-stop-shop for informationDate: 2016 11 02
A new internal Government water portal has been developed by NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) Water, as a one-stop shop for agencies to update environmental water data, improving reporting mechanisms, and ultimately benefitting irrigators and the community accessing information via the Environmental Water Register public interface.
DPI Water Director Information and Insights, Dr Christobel Ferguson, said the Environmental Water Portal would result in improved processes for Basin reporting requirements and ultimately beneficial outcomes for water users.
“The Environmental Water Portal is a web-based targeted interface for Government water bodies to maintain environmental water information in a common database which can then be disseminated to multiple reporting requirements as a single point of truth and quality assured dataset,” Dr Ferguson said.p>“It will also provide environmental water managers with access to monitor portfolio changes, tag or remove licences for environmental reporting, monitor permanent trading information, and maintain licence programs.
“Replacing traditional mechanisms of data exchange, the portal will connect government agencies, enabling consistency, speed and quality in reporting requirements and in providing public information.”
“These advancements will enable the provision of timely and up to date information to the Environmental Water Register, which is where irrigators and the public can access the latest in water facts,” Dr Ferguson said.
“DPI Water also has responsibility for delivering the NSW Basin Plan reporting requirements to the Murray Darling Basin Authority, and the new portal will ensure timely and accurate information is being used for these reporting obligations.”
The Environmental Water Portal which has commenced operations will enable agencies to maintain and manage their environmental holdings, providing transparency, consistent and quality environmental reporting.
